Average weight per week: when an indicator is more useful than one number

The average value can smooth out some of the everyday fluctuations if there are enough measurements taken in comparable conditions in a week.

The short answer

Compare weeks only when the frequency of entries is similar, and don't hide individual values for the sake of a nicer average.

A worked example

Worked calculation: a week contains four comparable values, 72.0, 72.4, 72.2 and 72.6 kg. They total 289.2 kg, giving 289.2 / 4 = 72.3 kg. Three empty dates do not enter the denominator as zeroes. Label the result 72.3 kg from four measurements during this week. It summarises available observations, not missing dates or the cause of change. Retain the four source values alongside the summary.

What to do

  1. 01

Select the same days or frequency of measurement.

  2. 02

Check that the conditions have not changed systematically.

  3. 03

Calculate the average of all actual values for the week.

  4. 04

Match a few weeks and note the direction rather than asking for an exact match.

Common mistakes

  • Compare the average of seven points with the average of one.
  • Eliminate high values without a predefined rule.
  • Consider the average as a medical standard.

The denominator matters more than neat rounding

Check that observations belong to the selected period and were obtained under reasonably similar conditions. If a day contains several readings, decide which series you are comparing rather than giving that date extra weight accidentally. A weekly mean from one observation is not as complete as one based on many. Vesometr retains the original values; calculate this teaching summary separately and put it in a note. Do not describe it as an automatically generated clinical metric. Rounding a summary should not reduce the precision of the original entries.

How to check the result

  • The total and denominator match the source values.
  • The observation count accompanies the mean.
  • Missing dates have not become zero weight.

How this works in Vesometr

The Vesometr graph shows the starting points; the average can be used as an additional summary without losing the primary data.

Limits of self-observation

Don't use weight changes as the only way to assess your health. Unexplained rapid weight changes, severe swelling, weakness or other worrying symptoms should be discussed with your doctor.
