Distinguish the estimated cost of cigarettes smoked from money spent buying packs. The two differ, especially across month boundaries.
A worked example
Worked example, using fictional prices. A 20-cigarette pack costs 240 ₽ and a day contains 5 cigarettes. Estimated consumption cost is 5 × 240 ÷ 20 = 60 ₽. Buying two packs that day produces a cash payment of 480 ₽, which should not match the app estimate. Some of that purchase remains for later days. A cigarette recorded at another pack price is calculated separately. The total values recorded consumption at the entered prices; it is neither a verified payment nor a measure of health savings.
What to do
- 01
Write down the number of cigarettes in the pack and the current price.
- 02
Fix the daily amount without rounding.
- 03
If the price changes, please update it from the appropriate date.
- 04
Compare months by actual amounts and number of days.
Common mistakes
- Multiply the current price by the long-term history.
- Does not include the purchase of individual packages of other sizes.
- Use spending as a source of shame instead of planning.
Know which expense you are calculating
Check one entry using an ordinary calculator. The price must refer to the pack while the count refers to cigarettes; confusing the units can multiply the result. Pack size matters as much as price. When the packaging changes, use the appropriate parameters for new entries and preserve historical ones. For a household budget, track purchases and remaining stock separately. Vesometr does not know how many packs are at home, which cigarettes were given away or when a card payment cleared. Compare consumption estimates over equal intervals and within the same currency.
How to check the result
- Price is per pack and the count is in cigarettes.
- The recorded pack size is correct.
- A sample calculation matches the formula.
- Estimated consumption is distinguished from purchases.
If the pack price changed during the period, check recording pack prices by date before comparing the totals.
How this works in Vesometr
Vesometr estimates cost as cigarette count × pack price ÷ pack size. Price and size are stored in each entry; this is not a purchase ledger.
