Why should the price of a pack be saved by date?

The historical price is needed so that the expense report reflects the reality of that month, and not the current cost of the item.

The short answer

Note each price change from the moment you started buying at it, without correcting old entries.

A worked example

Worked example, using fictional data. Monday contains 4 cigarettes from a 200 ₽ pack; Tuesday contains 4 from a 250 ₽ pack. Both packs contain 20. Estimated costs are 40 and 50 ₽, totalling 90 ₽. Replacing Monday’s price with the new one produces 100 ₽ and erases the historical difference. If Tuesday’s cigarettes came from the old pack, its price still applies despite the higher shop price. The purchase date alone does not identify the correct price for every cigarette consumed.

What to do

  1. 01

Check the cost and quantity of cigarettes in the package.

  2. 02

Update the price on the day you switch to a new purchase.

  3. 03

    Do not edit previous dates.

  4. 04

For different brands, add an explanation of the period.

Common mistakes

  • Recalculate the entire history automatically.
  • Forget about the other pack size.
  • Compare costs without taking into account the number of days of observation.

A new price does not revalue old stock

Use the pack from which the recorded cigarettes came, rather than relying only on the date a shop increased its price. When old and new packs overlap, separate entries with different prices and clear comments can preserve that distinction. Label an unknown price as an estimate instead of inventing precision. Check pack size and currency, particularly after travel. Change a historical entry to correct an input error, not simply to make all prices uniform. This keeps explanations possible: a cost difference may come from count, price, pack size or a combination of them.

How to check the result

  • Different prices are not silently mixed in one entry.
  • Old stock is not revalued at a new shop price.
  • Historical edits correct errors rather than price changes.
  • Currency and pack size were checked.

How this works in Vesometr

Pack price, pack size and currency belong to each smoking entry. Settings supply defaults for new entries; changing a default does not request a recalculation of history.
