How to check expiration dates in your home medicine cabinet

Regular checking reduces the risk of discovering an expired or damaged drug at the time it is needed.

The short answer

Focus on the labeling of a specific package, conditions after opening and storage instructions, and not just the year on the list.

A worked example

During a teaching review, two similar packages have different expiry dates. The writer checks each label instead of transferring an old card’s date to a new package, and separately records after-opening instructions where provided. An expired item is separated from current supplies while local handling arrangements are checked. The result is an updated record for the review date. Tablet appearance, a stored phone date and the absence of a smell do not establish suitability.

What to do

  1. 01

Review your calendar several times a year.

  2. 02

Check the date, integrity of packaging and storage conditions.

  3. 03

Separate expired items from current inventory.

  4. 04

Dispose of in accordance with local regulations, keeping out of reach of children and animals.

Common mistakes

  • Rewrite the expiration date from the outer box onto another blister.
  • Use the drug from a damaged package.
  • Extend the term according to appearance.

Check the particular package

A note does not replace labelling, storage conditions or after-opening instructions. If a date is unreadable or a package’s origin is uncertain, do not reconstruct it from memory; ask a pharmacist. Vesometr can keep an expiry description in notes but has no dedicated automatic expiry check or alert. Use your own calendar for inventory reviews. Check local disposal arrangements: a foreign source explaining expired-medicine risks does not define your local collection route. Do not independently extend a date based on a package’s appearance.

How to check the result

  • Each package’s label has been checked.
  • After-opening directions are considered separately where present.
  • A note is not mistaken for an automatic expiry check.

How this works in Vesometr

Expiry information can be retained in Vesometr card notes. There is no automatic expiry control: check the specific package label and storage conditions.

Limits of self-observation
