Weight plateau: what to check in your diary before drawing conclusions

A period without a noticeable change may be a real plateau, normal measurement noise, or the result of an observation window that is too short.

The short answer

Instead of immediately tightening the regime, first check the quality of the series: frequency, timing, conditions, omissions and accompanying notes.

A worked example

In a fictional month, the first two weeks contain four readings each and the next two only one each. The last two numbers match, so the user calls it a plateau. Review shows that the basis for comparison changed: there are fewer observations. The summary retains the counts and gaps, and the original dates are checked for changed conditions. The result is a better question about the pattern, not a decision to sharply change food, exercise or medicines because of two points.

What to do

  1. 01

Select a period of several weeks and count the number of comparable measurements.

  2. 02

Check to see if the scale has been changed in time, device or location.

  3. 03

Relate the plateau to sleep patterns, exercise, and nutrition as observations rather than proven causes.

  4. 04

Prepare a question for a specialist if the goal is related to treatment or the condition is troubling.

Common mistakes

  • Call plateaus two identical measurements in a row.
  • Hide posts that don't meet expectations.
  • Change your medication or diet on your own.

Check the quality of the series first

An apparently flat section may represent very different amounts of evidence. State the period, number of records and measurement conditions. Do not fill empty dates with calculated values to smooth the line. If observations are sufficient for your purpose, describe the finding without inventing a cause: readings stayed close during this period under these conditions. The word plateau does not prescribe what to do next. Discuss changes to a health-related plan with a professional using the original history, rather than a selected section of the image alone.

How to check the result

  • The review states the observation count and gaps.
  • Different measurement conditions are not silently combined.
  • No treatment decision is inferred from a flat section.

How this works in Vesometr

Vesometr's calendar and graphs allow you to return to primary points and not estimate plateaus from memory.

Limits of self-observation

Don't use weight changes as the only way to assess your health. Unexplained rapid weight changes, severe swelling, weakness or other worrying symptoms should be discussed with your doctor.
