How often to back up your diary

The frequency depends on how much new data you are willing to lose and how difficult it is to restore your first aid kit, notes, and history manually.

The short answer

Select calendar rhythm and extra copy before updating your phone, traveling or bulk editing.

A worked example

Worked example: a user adds observations every day but backs up only before a holiday. Losing the phone could remove the entire period since the last JSON. They choose a convenient weekly backup day and an additional rule: save before repairs, transfers and extensive entry corrections. This is a personal data-saving schedule, rather than a medical observation schedule. They check each new file's date and destination, retaining one previous version until the new copy has been checked successfully.

What to do

  1. 01

Estimate the volume of records for a week or month.

  2. 02

    Set a recurring copy day.

  3. 03

Create an unscheduled copy before important changes.

  4. 04

Check periodically that the file is opening to select recovery.

Common mistakes

  • Create many copies without deleting old ones.
  • Store all versions in one place.
  • Consider the presence of a file name as proof of its integrity.

Choose a tolerable gap in recoverable data

There is no universal backup schedule: it depends on how much history would need to be reconstructed manually. A long gap may be inconvenient if many important entries are added daily, while occasional recording may suit another rhythm. Creating JSON is user-initiated, so an external reminder should name the complete action: create, save and locate the file. A collection of old filenames does not prove that a backup is current. Look at the latest verified copy and changes made since then. Before an action that affects stored data, save a separate, distinguishable snapshot.

How to check the result

  • A clear backup day or trigger has been chosen.
  • The latest checked copy can be located.
  • Entries added since that copy are identifiable.
  • A separate version is created before transfer or deletion.

How this works in Vesometr

Vesometr creates a copy manually upon request, so an external reminder of regularity remains a good user habit.
